Note

The Phantastische Suite für Klavier (Fantastic Suite for Piano) was written in 1948 at the end of the composer’s post-war burst of creative energy. The work is splashy, bold, and full of life. Sadly, the 15-page manuscript is missing pages 6 to 11 – approximately half the work. What survives are two complete movements and one nearly complete. The first movement, in original and revised versions, is complete. A slow second movement appears nearly complete missing only the final page. The editor, Maurice Saylor, has added 3 bars at the end to close off the movement. After the missing pages, there are 9 bars of the penultimate movement. The rousing finale is, fortunately complete. This is a remarkably inventive work. One hopes the missing pages will one day be located.
